Evans?) and downs (Ricco, you cheat!) this week. The sprint finish on Stage 12 was super exciting! I'm glad that Cavendish got the win, but I thought my QuickStep man Gert Steegmans had it- oh well!

I'm almost done with my main project, the French-flag market bag! It is a super easy knit- I can watch the Tour and knit- and I'm really happy with the striping. It's striping exactly as I wanted it to! Yay! I plan on finishing it tonight, so I can use it tomorrow at the farmer's market.

I'm thinking I might make more market bags, in kid-friendly colors for all of the kiddos. I have plenty of cotton yarns in kid-approved colors, so market bags for all!

Quick update for Team QuickStitch

I'm still chugging on with the peloton! It was delicious, served over couscous, and we enjoyed a bottle of Ugni Blanc/Viognier, from the south of France, with our lovely dinner. Next up- a QuickStep/QuickStitch blue hat- maybe a beret even! And the French Market bag- tres bien!

My favorite riders so far are Thomas Voeckler, whom I've admired since he started trying for the Polka Dot jersey back in Virenque's day. Ouch.

Anyway- new motivation! The Tour! I'm part of the Tour de France KAL again this year, and hope to do better both with the blogging and the knitting! Last year's project, Wisp, remains a UFO. Ahem. This year, instead of going for the Polka Dot jersey, like my favorite all time Tour rider, Richard Virenque, I've chosen the goal of just keeping up with the peloton in the maillot jaune category.

Also new this year- teams!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_Jouy5Xv3YBI/SGz7RZm47YI/AAAAAAAAABs/x9GpXQZFxO0/s320/Quickstitch-TDFKAL-button-3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218822344565910914" />
I'm part of Team QuickStep, or Team QuickStitch, as we're now known. Seems like a great bunch of gals to pal around the peloton for the duration. My project plans? I'm planning on knitting a lacy scarf, possibly the Branching Out scarf from Knitty, in a deep golden (maillot jaune) Silky Wool. I'm also going to knit a market bag from red, white and blue cotton yarn, much like the French flag. And possibly a beret, for osme French style along the way. Sounds like a lot, but I'm not going for the sprint win, so if it doesn't all happen, it's a-ok with me!

In other news... it's my Sweet Man's birthday today. He's been suitably gifted, and will be stuffed with cake (cream cheese cake) later tonight. Chicken fried steaks for supper, some good brews, and a low key day- sounds good to me!

Till then-
G

C is for Construction

C is for Construction.
Yes, dreadfully late with this entry, but the camera gods were against me.

We've had almost 90 inches of snow this winter, which is way too much! All three of our bedrooms have neat, angled ceilings. It's because our house is an older home, built in 1938, and has a very angled roof line. The stairwell has many angles as well.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Jouy5Xv3YBI/R5JnNGv5wLI/AAAAAAAAAAk/NcyedSdbiLA/s320/Photo+61.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157297998140129458" />

We've been in this house since our twins were two weeks old, and they'll be five in June. It's the first house we bought- we'd spent several years here and there, mostly in rented duplexes, and a couple apartments. We had a horrible experience in our first apartment (needless to say, February in Michigan is not an ideal time for the roof to be replaced), and found a great duplex to rent nearby. It was built in 1951, and had neat touches from that era. Thus started our love of older homes.

This house has been great for our family, though we seem to be bursting at the seams these days. I guess four kids will do that to most homes. Some of the angles are great- Sophie's bed is nestled under her angled ceiling, and our closet has shelves on one side, and the ceiling angles up to the hanging bars nicely. The bathroom ceiling angles from tall by the door and mirror, down to much lower by the window. Our fireplace has nice angles too, and the whole house is angular outside. It's like a modified cape cod style set sideways.

Foggy, foggy day

We've had a couple of really foggy days here in Wisconsin. There was a terrible traffic accident yesterday not far from here: 100 cars involved, and 2 fatalities. I guess 35 inches of snow on the ground, coupled with temperatures in the 40s creates very dense, lingering fog. We'd better be careful what we wish for, as far as weather.

We drove in dense fog all across the state of Iowa a couple of weeks ago. It was tiring and frightening, but we were trying to get across the state en route to our families for the holidays, and wanted to beat the winter storm slated for the next day. We did indeed beat it- by hours only- but I have no desire to drive in fog that thick again any time soon. It was a relief to hit Council Bluffs and have it clear off. The strong winds when we finally stopped for the night, at York, Nebraska, were intense and bitterly cold. But at least the rest of our drive the next day was clear as crystal.

I long for the sun and strong winds to blow this fog away already! Better check on installation of a foghorn...

A new year, a new goal...

I've joined my first "-Along"; any guesses?

It's the ABC-Along, started by Vicki-Knitorious. I really enjoyed the 2006 version, and look forward to challenge myself to blog at least every two weeks for the whole year. I'm already trying to figure out some good topics for every letter....

Winter has us strongly in it's grasp, and the snow is very deep around here. I'm glad the holidays are over, and I need to start working on some of those New Year's resolutions- lose weight, clean house, blog, lots of knitting...

I still have to finish a scarf that I'm working on for my brother- oops! But he did really love the hat I knit him. It fit, was colors he likes (camel and olive), and only took me two days. Yes! Too, too adorable on the boy! He loves it, since orange is his favorite color these days.

Supper is calling my name. Rather, the kids' rumbly tummies must be filled. Pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes with bacon, maple sausage, and ambrosia on the side. Definitely should work on that.

I have done a bit of knitting since I finished Soph's hat. I did a fast, soft hat for a friend's baby; alas, no pic taken! It was made from Berroco Pure Merino, in the colors of Teaberry and Ensign Blue. I made a tiny tassel for the top, and it is cute on the sweet baby. Next up- finishing Goodwin's hat. It's a multi-blue and orange, made from Softee-Chunky. It'll be quick, and I'll probably make him two, since I will have plenty of yarn left over. The second will most likely be orange and green, possibly in a pumpkin sort of way. Can you tell the boy likes orange?

Holiday knitting? To be determined. We should be doing our gift drawing on Thanksgiving, which is next week. Eeep! How did Turkey Day sneak up so fast? I can't wait for it, though. The food, the company, the babysitters... sigh. Yep, a few dates will be planned! Yay! Anyway, as far as holiday knitting- maybe some hats for the niece and nephews. If I get in gear, I could probably whip some out pretty fast. Must ask about color preferences soon!

Here's another of my coffee/yarn still life pics from this morning, just for fun.

Finished object!

Yay! We're watching our usual late Sunday night tradition- TCM's Silent Sunday Night. The movie is "The Battleship Potemkin". It has been pretty good so far, with an excellent score.

We had a great fall day today. Slept in (miraculous!), a wonderful yummy brunch, some general lazing about... then to the farm market to pick out pumpkins to carve soon! The kids had a great time picking them out, and all came back with very different looks. The weather was gorgeous, the kids had fun, all was great.

"To the bottom to feed the worms!"

Except the damn lady bugs. Technically Japanese Lady Beetles. Nasty little buggers. They kept flying at me, landing on me, and giving me bites. Then releasing their lovely, musty stink. Ugh. Hope they freeze soon!

"The land is ours!"

We also took the kids to Governor Dodge State Park. The fall foliage was beautiful! We let the kids play on a playground till the darkness drove us home. We will go back- we didn't get to see as much as we wanted. The Stephen's Waterfall was especially pretty.

"Together with the sun, the news hits the city... rebellion..."

Knitting news- I have my CoffeeSwap 3 partner- on to shopping!
-maybe a knit night on Tuesday, replete with wine and dessert- here's hoping!
-still need to finish Soph's hat, the Wisp, a washcloth... the list goes on. What once was lost, now is found!

Yeah, it's been a while. The Tour is long over, along with my hopes of a scandal-free Tour. Ugh. Still miffed about that one. I am still working on my TdF KAL project- you can tell I don't use performance enhancing substances! But I did knit on it for 2 hours last week, and it will be done!

Knitting news- I'm in the third Knitter's CoffeeSwap- yay! Can't wait to see who my partner is this time around. I love, love, love this swap- coffee and yarn- what could be better? I'll answer the swap questions here, in case this blog actually gets read!

SWAP QUESTIONS

Here are the questions:

1. Whole bean or ground? whole bean

2. Fully-loaded or decaf? fully-loaded here!

3. Regular or flavored? either is fine, but I don't care for fruity flavors

4. How do you drink your coffee? sweet with cream

5. Favorite coffee ever? Just Coffee's Bike Fuel blend- it is truly scrumptious!

6. Are you fussy about your coffee or will any old bean do? I prefer fair-trade coffee, and don't like Starbuck's at all

7. Favorite treats to have with your coffee? I love scones, baked goods, dark chocolate, doughnuts... you name it!

8. Anything else about your coffee preferences? Can't think of any

9. Yarn/fiber you love? soft wools, like merino, some superwash (since I have kiddos), variegated colors, tweeds... it's all pretty good! I love cashmerino, and covet Malabrigo. My LYS has sooo many goodies right now, but I'm trying to use up some stash right now, and it's hard!

10. Yarn/fiber you hate? 100% mohair- I'm allergic, glitzy fun furs, not a huge fan of 100% acrylic, but it has it's place -see kiddos above.

11. What's on your needles? My TdF KAL lace project, finishing up a hat, a washcloth, a small felted bag... soon to try mittens! I'm also planning some ponchos/shoulder wraps for my three girls, and a sweater for my son. Where's the time? Need more time!

12. Favorite colors? Fall colors especially now! Jewel tones, blues/greens... I love variegated yarns, multi-colored yarns, self-striping... I'm not into pastels right now, and tend to only use solids for felting.

13. Allergies? Just to mohair.

14. Anything you really love, really don't like, or just need to get off your chest? I really love a great cup of coffee on a crisp fall morning, I really don't like the Indian summer we've been having, and I can't wait to meet my partner and start shopping!

There- that should cover that!

I'll have to post more later- I have many projects in the works, both knitting and sewing, and need to get cracking on some housework now, since my inlaws are coming for a visit tomorrow! More later!

Till then-G

The Tour, the Tour...

Wow! I felt awful for Michael Rodgers the other day- the bruises covering his chest were horrible. I can't believe he rode on with a dislocated shoulder! And poor Stuart O'Grady! Hopefully they will both be back tomorrow.

Progress to report on my TdF KAL project, Wisp! With a new needle purchase, and staying up way too late (I felt it this morning!), I completed one full repeat of the pattern. Only 15 more to go! At least at this rate, if I do one repeat a day, I WILL earn my King of the Mountains jersey! YeeHaw! I'm even considering yarn for my wine cozy. Do I stay good, and use something from stash, or do I celebrate the Tour and feeling of joie de vivre, and splurge on new yarn? Hmmm. My LYS has the perfect new yarn, that's red, white and blue (named "Old Glory"), but suitable for a French flag reference.... or I could find some yellow to honor the maillot jaune.... choices, choices!

We've had a break in our sweltery weather, and nothing beats having a cool breeze sweep through the house in July. The kids had a great picnic and park outing yesterday, and will get some outdoor time today as well.

Till then- G

Is this thing still here?

Yeah, so, the blogging thing? Not so easy to do. Doesn't help that it took me until now to figure out how to access the blog after the Google switchover. Yeah, lame. Anyway....

So I'm launching into it again. Kids are good, albeit trapped inside due to the heat. Sweet Man is great. Life is pretty good.

On the knitting front-
I've joined the Tour de France KAL. I'm attempting to capture the King of the Mountains Polka-Dot Jersey. Considering the Tour started on Saturday, and I have yet to knit a stitch... we'll see how it goes. My project for the KAL is Wisp from Knitty. Instead of Kidsilk Haze (I get itchy from mohair!), I'm using Alpaca With a Twist, Fino, in "Twilight". It's my first attempt at lace, so here's hoping I have some success. As for the Tour- the addiction has reared it's ugly head already. I watched the live coverage this morning, saw the replay already, and will most likely catch the expanded coverage tonight. Yeah, it's a sickness.

Other recent knitting-
I made four hats for the Dulaan Project. I used leftover yarn from the kids' winter hats (yep, finished those during the winter!), and yarn from a gift project from the holidays (felted tote bag for my soon to be SIL). They turned out pretty cute! Pictures should be forthcoming soon- my laptop died, and I haven't had a chance to load anything on the replacement yet. But at least I figured out how to post pics on the blog!

Well, now that I've started back on the blog, and have it mostly figured out... I have no excuse to not keep at it. I have so many projects in the works (little felted bags, a tank-top for Soph, more hats, my Wisp) that I need to track them so they don't languish in the UFO bags any longer. I have so many other crafty projects in the works as well- sewing doll blankets, totes, dresses for the girls... and I'm going to learn how to crochet (Sophie wants to learn)- so I have got to have some accountability!

Till then-G

Awash in a sea of suckitude...

Yeah, not feeling productive today. I made a nice brunch- veggie-full eggs, hash browns, bacon, fruit salad and coffee- but have puttered out since then. Partly because I am on potty duty. The twins are potty training, and are demanding an audience for their meager accomplishments. How fun. I also have housework staring at me, but I'm not motivated to do it. Blech.

On the project front-
*Lucy's hat- about 1/3 done. I just having picked it up as much this weekend. I hope to work on it more tonight.

*um, nothing else to report. I did decide on a gift project, and acquired the necessary yarn. It's to be a small felted bag. I got Patons Classic Merino in the Regency colorway, and Bernat Bling Bling in Moulin Rouge. The Patons is in oranges, pinks, and burgundy, and the Bernat is a furry, sparkly carry along yarn that matches perfectly. I'm thinking about beaded handles, or leather if the beaded seems like overkill. It'll be a fast knit after the hat is done.

I did have a nice day with Sophie yesterday. We shopped at a craft show, had lunch out, and got to listen to Kevin Henkes, a great children's author and illustrator, speak. He was awesome, and does such great work. The girls got to play in the snow, and had a great time.

Guess it isn't all that bad. Well, we see how the rest of the day goes!

Till then- G

More updates and a swap!

Yay! Another finished object to report! I finished Sadie's Sunset hat! It's cute, hopefully warm, and fits!

We're finally through with the sickness, though stomach problems linger on for Sweet man and I. I'm having a scan of my gall bladder tomorrow to rule out gallstones; hopefully it's just side effects from a virus lingering on. Wish me luck!

Sweet man had a great time in California last weekend; it's led to a lot of possibilities for him, and was fun. No fair! He's currently busy with his work; he's an anthropologist, and some of his work focuses on Neanderthals, which has been all over the news in the science world. All I can say is great things ahead for him!

Project updates-
*Sadie's hat- done!

On the needles-
*Lucy's hat- started yesterday, hopefully done over the weekend. I plan on working on it a lot tonight.

*another washcloth, for gift giving. I'm also going to try making a matching soap bag/ sachet.

*Soph's legwarmers- one half done! It'll take a while. My hand cramps up a bit knitting it, but they'll be so warm and dense!

Planned projects-

*a hat for Sophie, to be started as soon as Lucy's is done

*a hat for me!

*felted bags- ideally one for a gift, one for me! and maybe some for the girls with stash yarn

*Fuzzy Feet- this is really tempting me! I'd love to try socks in a large size, felted to hide mistakes. Plus, they'd be warm!

*gift projects- some sewing, possibly some knitted. I need to list out some ideas and time scheduling to see if I can get everything I want to do done on time. I'd like to make some comforters for the girls, bags for the girls, some fleece pillows for gifts, fleece hats for gifts, and some other goodies.

A swap! I'm in a swap for the first time! The Knitter's Coffee Swap! I'm really excited, and can't wait to see who I get! To answer some questions for the swap-

QUESTIONS
1. Whole bean or ground? Whole bean!

2. Fully-loaded or decaf? Preferably fully-loaded, though decaf has it's place.

3. Regular or flavored? Both are good!

4. How do you drink your coffee? Sweet with cream

5. Favorite coffee ever? I really like Kona

6. Are you fussy about your coffee or will any old bean do? Not too fussy! Don't like super acidic dark roasts, though.

7. Favorite treats to have with your coffee? I like to make scones and muffins, sometimes cookies go well, chocolate is always welcome!

8. Anything else about your coffee preferences? Not really!

9. What treats do you enjoy with your coffee? See above! Neat mugs are fun, biscotti can be good too.

10. Yarn/fiber you love? I like lots, especially variegated and tweedy/ heathered yarns. Wools are great, but I use acrylics on occasion. I like Manos Del Uruguay, Debbie Bliss, Duchess... all kinds!

11. Yarn/fiber you hate? Not hate, but 100% mohair makes me itch. Don't love funfurs, but other novelties are fun sometimes. Don't care for Lion Brand Homespun.

12. What's on your needles? Hats! And washcloths.

13. Favorite colors? I like most colors, but not black so much. Blues, greens, jewel tones, autumnal colors...

14. Allergies? Nope!

15. Anything you really love, really don't like, or just need to get off your chest? I really like Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, really don't like super dark roast coffee, and just need a break! Can't wait to see what my partner likes!

Till then- G

I've got the barfy blues...

Yeah, we've been a bit busy here. Barfy kids, blech. Poor kiddos caught a tummy bug, and we've had a few days of sick kids. With four, it seems to take a few days to get through it. My Sweet Man has had a general feeling of malaise, but I seemed to have escaped unharmed, though dead tired. Maybe this will be our dose of illness for the next few months- yeah right!

On the knitting/crafting front-

*FO- a cotton washcloth, that's been on the needles for months. It's finally done, and I might be making more for holiday giving.

*On the needles- Sadie's Sunset hat. It's a variegated chunky yarn in pinks, magenta and orange- the colors of a beautiful Kansas sunset. It's ready to be kitchnered and tassled. It matches the blue/green stripey hat for Goodwin. Next up is a Bluesy stripe for Lucy, followed by a blue/green/pink hat for Sophie. All tassled, all chunky yarn, all quick.

*Also on the needles- legwarmers for Soph. I have the first one about 1/3 done. It's mindless knitting to fall back on. The yarn is a heathered green Cascade 220 superwash carried along with Kinder in a blue/green/pink variegated colorway. They'll be dense and warm.

*Holiday knitting- TBD. I should be finding out who I get to craft for in the next few days. It might be a felted bag, washcloths and soap bag, hat/scarf combo... I'll decide when I get my name. I can't wait!

*Projects waiting in the wings- a cashmerino hat for myself, in teal and purple, my second sock ever, in Cascade Fixation, and a few felting projects.

Sewing projects- a few simple ones. I'm in a rush to finish Halloween costumes. I made a cute vest for Sophie's Lady Pirate costume, need to add zigzags to a shirt for Goody's Charlie Brown costume, kitty ears for Sadie, and a witch cape for Lucy. I also need to hem some valances for the living room- I'll try to do that tomorrow. I'm planning some simple projects for holiday gifts for the nephews and niece- maybe no-sew pillows, ear warmers... maybe some made up stuffies, or little totes. I have way more ideas than time!

My true goal for the next day or so is housecleaning- yippee. Need to de-germ everything, in preparation for houseguests. My folks are coming for a visit, which means dates with my sweetie!

Till then-G

Why can't I write?

I don't know why I struggle to write. A stripey blue and green hat for Goody. It's cute, fits him perfectly, and has tassels that he loves to shake around. Yay! Next up- a similar hat for each of the girls.

I also finished my very first sock! Cascade Fixation, simple stockinette sock. Now to start the other one...

I have lots of ideas for gift knitting- just need to figure out who gets my goodies!

*Family is great, though very tiring! Goody is climbing to rival any monkey, which is really annoying. The girls are great, and Soph is reading chapter books by herself- I can't believe she's so big!

More later- must write more often!

Trying this again...

So, the first time was mildly positive. Not many posts, but some nice ones. I'm trying this again. I really want to become a better writer. It seems to come so easily to some; I read many wonderful blogs everyday. I am amazed at the quality of writers I've found. I hope I can write just a fraction as well as those I read all the time. So, here I go again!

The summer is really starting to heat up, as are tempers around here. The girls are at each other constantly. I am counting down the days until school starts again. Oh, to have Soph safely tucked away learning all day, instead of baiting the twins! How long until September again?

We almost have another walker! G-Dub is getting bolder at taking steps. He did a solid 4-5 steps more than once today. It will be so different to have him running after the girls, instead of crawling as fast as his chubby knees allow.

Projects- Well, knitting seems to have fallen by the wayside. I have a half-done washcloth that's languishing in a corner, and so many plans for so much more. I either can forget about my plans, or not sleep again for the next three months. I have window treatments to do, little quilts I want to try, burp cloths for friends' babies to be, winter hats for the kids (that should have been done last winter!), aprons for the girls, trying to sew stuffed creatures, and on and on and on. Blech! If only I didn't get ideas!

The Sweet Man is great. Traveled overseas safely and back again, and out of town next week for a short bit. It'll be nice when his travels are over for a while.

Well, time to test this posting business- I really need to get back into it!

Till then- G
